Common questions
Is this the same as a real hearing test?
No, and we would not pretend otherwise. It is a screening check run through an ordinary phone or computer speaker, which cannot be calibrated the way clinic equipment is, and it measures both ears together. It gives you a useful indication of whether a full assessment would help. A proper diagnostic test — each ear separately, air and bone conduction, speech testing and a look inside your ears — is free at our clinics or in your home.
How long does the online hearing test take?
About two minutes — a few questions about everyday listening, then four quiet tones.
Do I need headphones?
No. The tones play through whatever your phone, tablet or computer already has, so there is nothing to find and nothing to plug in. Because of that the check measures both ears together rather than each one separately — if you want your ears compared, that is part of the free test at our clinics or in your home.
Is it free?
Completely. There is nothing to pay and no obligation to book anything afterwards.
What happens to my results?
They stay on your screen — we do not see them unless you ask us to. If you go on to book an appointment or request a home visit, your results are sent with it so the hearing expert knows what the check found, and your details are only ever used to contact you about your hearing.
Can wax affect the result?
Yes, and it often does. Wax blocking the canal muffles sound and can look exactly like hearing loss on a screening check, which is one reason a proper examination matters.
